About this edition
Composed in the autumn of 1816, when Schubert was just nineteen, the Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major, D. 485 stands among the most cherished of his early symphonic works. Scored for a modest Classical-era orchestra—without clarinets, trumpets, or timpani—it radiates a lyrical warmth and formal poise often described as Mozartean, written in the very year Schubert filled his diary with rapturous praise for Mozart's music. The result is a work of disarming grace: intimate in scale, yet endlessly inventive in melody and harmonic color, and beloved by orchestras and audiences for its sunny, songful charm.
This edition reproduces the score as published in Franz Schubert's Werke, the pioneering critical complete edition issued by Breitkopf & Härtel of Leipzig. Symphony No. 5 appears in Serie I, No. 5 of that collection, printed in 1885 under plate number F.S. 5. The volume was edited by Johannes Brahms, whose careful engagement with Schubert's manuscripts helped establish a musical text still consulted by performers and scholars today. As part of the first systematic effort to gather and standardize Schubert's complete output, this Gesamtausgabe remains a landmark of nineteenth-century music publishing and a touchstone for later editions of Schubert's symphonies.
