About this edition
Few works in the orchestral canon hold the mystique of Schubert's Symphony No. 8 in B Minor, D. 759 — the "Unfinished." Composed in 1822 but left after only two completed movements, it nevertheless stands as one of the most emotionally complete symphonies ever written, opening with that haunting unison theme in the cellos and basses and unfolding through music of extraordinary lyrical depth and dramatic shadow. The premiere had to wait until 1865, nearly four decades after Schubert's death, when the manuscript finally surfaced in the possession of Anselm Hüttenbrenner.
This printing reproduces the score as published in Franz Schubert's Werke, Serie I, No. 8, issued by Breitkopf & Härtel of Leipzig in 1885 (plate F.S. 8). The Schubert Werke was the first complete critical edition of the composer's output, prepared between 1884 and 1897 by an editorial team that included Johannes Brahms, who edited the symphonies with the same care and reverence he brought to his own work. For more than a century this edition has served as a foundational reference for performers, conductors, and scholars, and it remains a touchstone of the Schubert performance tradition.
