About this edition
Composed in 1813 when Franz Schubert was just sixteen years old, the Symphony No. 1 in D major, D. 82, is the earliest of his completed symphonies and a remarkable document of a teenage genius finding his voice. Written as a student exercise at Vienna's Stadtkonvikt and dedicated to the school's director, Dr. Innocenz Lang, the symphony shows Schubert absorbing the lessons of Haydn, Mozart, and early Beethoven while already revealing the lyrical warmth and harmonic imagination that would come to define his mature style. It remains a favorite among conductors and ensembles seeking a spirited, accessible entry point into Schubert's orchestral output.
This edition reproduces the score as published in Franz Schubert's Werke, the first complete critical edition of Schubert's music, issued by Breitkopf & Härtel of Leipzig. The First Symphony appeared as No. 1 of Series I in 1884, under plate number F.S. 1. The symphony volumes of this landmark collected edition were edited under the guidance of Johannes Brahms, whose own compositional stature and deep affinity for Schubert's music lent the project exceptional editorial authority. For well over a century, this Breitkopf & Härtel text has served as a standard reference score for performance and scholarship, prized for its clarity and its grounding in careful study of Schubert's sources.
