About this edition
Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 75 is one of the most poignant works in his catalog — the composer's final concerto and, in many ways, his unfinished farewell to the genre. Originally conceived as a symphony in E-flat (the so-called "Symphony in E-flat" that Tchaikovsky ultimately abandoned), its first movement was recast as this single-movement Allegro brillante for piano and orchestra in 1893, completed just weeks before the composer's death. The result is a substantial concerto movement of nearly twenty minutes, rich in lyrical melody, virtuosic display, and the unmistakable orchestral splendor of late Tchaikovsky.
This printing reproduces the first edition full score issued by P. Jurgenson of Moscow in 1894 (plate number 19616), with the parallel imprint of D. Rahter in Hamburg for Western European distribution. Jurgenson was Tchaikovsky's principal publisher throughout his career and worked directly from the composer's manuscripts and the posthumous editorial efforts of Sergei Taneyev, who prepared the orchestration of the surviving sketches. As the original publication overseen by those closest to Tchaikovsky, this edition has long served as the textual foundation for performance and scholarship of Op. 75.
