Frühlingsstimmen ("Voices of Spring"), Op. 410, holds a special place among Johann Strauss Jr.'s waltzes: composed in 1882, it was conceived not for the ballroom but for the concert platform, originally with a dazzling coloratura soprano part and only afterward recast in the purely orchestral form most listeners know today. Dispensing with the customary slow introduction, it launches straight into a quicksilver, through-composed main theme whose rapid runs, trills, and sudden dynamic swerves seem to imitate birdsong and gusts of spring air. Brilliant, capricious, and technically demanding for the strings and winds alike, it has remained a beloved showpiece and a fixture of the Vienna New Year's Concert.
