About this edition
Gioachino Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia is the crowning achievement of opera buffa, a work whose sparkling overture, dazzling patter arias, and effervescent ensembles have made it one of the most beloved and frequently performed operas in the repertoire. Composed in a legendary burst of creativity in 1816, the opera's wit, melodic invention, and sheer theatrical energy continue to captivate audiences and challenge performers two centuries after its premiere.
This full score reproduces the historic Ricordi edition, engraved in Milan circa 1920 (plate 112118), later reprinted by Broude Brothers of New York (plate 22). G. Ricordi & Co. served as Rossini's Italian publisher and was the principal custodian of the composer's operatic legacy, making Ricordi editions the standard performance and study texts for Italian opera throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Broude Brothers reprint further extended the reach of this authoritative Italian engraving to American libraries, conservatories, and orchestras.
