Composed in the astonishing summer of 1788 alongside Symphonies Nos. 39 and 40, Mozart's Symphony No. 41 in C major stands as the crowning achievement of his symphonic output and the final symphony he would write. The work earned its nickname "Jupiter" not from Mozart himself but from later admirers struck by its Olympian grandeur, and it is justly celebrated for its breathtaking five-voice fugal finale, in which Mozart weaves together the movement's principal themes in a contrapuntal tour de force that has few equals in the entire orchestral literature.
This volume reproduces the score as published by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig in 1880 as part of the landmark Mozarts Werke — the first complete critical edition of Mozart's works, issued between 1877 and 1883 under the editorial guidance of leading German scholars of the period. The "Jupiter" appears in Serie VIII (Symphonien) as No. 41, bearing plate number W.A.M. 551. Long regarded as a foundational source for performers and scholars, the Breitkopf edition shaped the modern reception of Mozart's orchestral music and remains a standard reference more than a century after its publication.
