About this edition

Composed in November 1783 during a brief stop in Linz on Mozart's return journey to Vienna, the Symphony No. 36 in C major, K. 425 — the "Linz" — was famously written in just four days to fulfill a concert obligation for Count Thun. Despite this remarkable haste, the work stands among Mozart's finest symphonic achievements: it is the first of his symphonies to open with a slow introduction, a gesture that signals the new expressive ambition of his late symphonic style. The luminous Andante in F major, the contrapuntally rich finale, and the pervasive use of trumpets and timpani give the "Linz" a festive grandeur that makes it a cornerstone of the Classical orchestral repertoire.

This score reproduces the engraving from the celebrated Mozarts Werke, the first complete critical edition of Mozart's works, issued by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig between 1877 and 1883. The "Linz" appears in Serie VIII (Symphonien), Band 3, No. 36, pages 37–80, bearing plate number W.A.M. 425, published in 1880. Prepared under the editorial supervision of leading nineteenth-century Mozart scholars, this Gesamtausgabe was for many decades the standard scholarly reference for Mozart's orchestral music and remains a touchstone edition prized for its careful engraving, clear layout, and faithful presentation of the composer's text.
