About this edition

Composed in the summer of 1782 amid the whirlwind of Mozart's wedding to Constanze Weber and the premiere of Die Entführung aus dem Serail, the "Haffner" Symphony began life as a serenade for a Salzburg ennoblement celebration before Mozart reshaped it into one of his most exhilarating symphonic statements. Its arresting opening leap of two octaves, the radiant Andante, and the breathless Presto finale — which Mozart instructed should be played "as fast as possible" — make this a cornerstone of the Classical orchestral repertoire and an enduring favorite of conductors and audiences alike.

This score reproduces the text from the celebrated Mozarts Werke (Serie VIII, Band 3, No. 35, pages 1–36), issued by Breitkopf & Härtel of Leipzig in 1880 under plate number W.A.M. 385. The Breitkopf Alte Mozart-Ausgabe was the first complete critical edition of Mozart's works, prepared by leading nineteenth-century scholars including Johannes Brahms, Joseph Joachim, Philipp Spitta, and Julius Rietz. For well over a century it has served as the foundational reference text for performers, scholars, and subsequent editors, prized for its careful engraving, clarity of layout, and faithful presentation of Mozart's musical text.
