About this edition
Composed in Salzburg in the summer of 1780, Mozart's Symphony No. 34 in C major, K.338, stands as the last symphony he wrote before his fateful move to Vienna — and it is a work of striking ceremonial brilliance. Scored for a festive orchestra including trumpets and timpani, the symphony's three movements (Mozart famously omitted a minuet) move from a regal Allegro vivace through a tender Andante di molto for strings to a whirling 6/8 finale that ranks among his most exhilarating symphonic conclusions.
This volume reproduces the score as published in the landmark Mozarts Werke, the first complete critical edition of Mozart's music, issued by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig between 1877 and 1883. K.338 appears in Serie VIII (Symphonien), Band 2, as No. 34, on pages 1–36 (paginated 239–274 in the bound volume), bearing plate number W.A.M. 338. Prepared with the scholarly rigor that defined the great German Gesamtausgaben of the late nineteenth century, this edition served as the foundational text for performers and editors for nearly a century and remains a respected reference for studying Mozart's symphonic writing.
