Composed in the spring of 1774 when Mozart was just eighteen, Symphony No. 29 in A major stands as the crowning achievement of his Salzburg symphonic period and a work that already foreshadows the mature symphonist of the Vienna years. Its opening octave-drop theme, the searching lyricism of the Andante, the muscular rhythmic drive of the finale, and the disciplined four-movement structure with two horns and pairs of oboes mark a decisive leap beyond the galant conventions of his earlier symphonies. This score reproduces the text from the original Mozarts Werke, the first complete critical edition of Mozart's works, issued by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig between 1877 and 1883 under the editorial direction of leading Mozart scholars of the era. Symphony No. 29 appears in Serie VIII, Band 2, No. 29 (plate W.A.M. 201), published in 1880. For more than a century this edition served as the standard reference text for performers and scholars worldwide, and it remains a touchstone of nineteenth-century Mozart scholarship — engraved with the clarity, generous spacing, and meticulous care for which Breitkopf & Härtel was renowned.
