About this edition
Composed in October 1773 shortly after Mozart's return from his transformative Italian journeys, Symphony No. 24 in B-flat Major, K. 182, captures the seventeen-year-old composer at a moment of stylistic confidence and lyrical grace. Cast in three compact movements and scored for an intimate ensemble of flutes, oboes, horns, and strings, the work is notable for its singing Andantino ma adagio in E-flat — one of the most tender slow movements of Mozart's Salzburg years — framed by a buoyant opening Allegro spiritoso and a sparkling Allegro finale in 3/8.
This score reproduces the symphony as published in the celebrated Mozarts Werke, the first complete critical edition of Mozart's works, issued by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig between 1877 and 1883. The volume reproduced here is Serie VIII (Symphonien), Band 2, No. 24, dating from 1880 and bearing plate number W.A.M. 182. Prepared by some of the most distinguished Mozart scholars of the late nineteenth century, the Breitkopf edition established the textual foundation upon which virtually all subsequent Mozart scholarship and performance practice has been built, and it remains a touchstone reference for conductors, performers, and researchers today.
