About this edition
Composed in the spring of 1773 during a creative burst that followed Mozart's third Italian journey, Symphony No. 22 in C Major, K.162 is a compact, festive work that captures the seventeen-year-old composer at a pivotal moment of stylistic transition. Scored for a brilliant ensemble that includes pairs of oboes, horns, and trumpets alongside strings, the symphony's three movements radiate the bright, celebratory character of the C-major "trumpet" tradition while showcasing Mozart's increasingly confident handling of orchestral color and Italianate melodic invention. Though briefer than the great later symphonies, K.162 rewards close study as a window into the Salzburg symphonist's rapidly maturing voice.
This score is reproduced from the landmark Mozarts Werke, the first complete critical edition of Mozart's works, issued by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig between 1877 and 1883. K.162 appears in Serie VIII (Symphonien), Band 2, as No. 22 (pages 1–12), bearing the plate number W.A.M. 162. Edited under the supervision of leading nineteenth-century Mozart scholars and prepared with the meticulous engraving standards for which Breitkopf & Härtel was renowned, the Mozarts Werke remains a foundational reference for performers and researchers alike, and its clean, generously spaced typography continues to serve as an exemplar of orchestral score engraving.
