About this edition

Composed in July 1772 when Mozart was just sixteen, the Symphony No. 20 in D Major, K. 133 stands among the finest of his Salzburg symphonies and reveals a composer rapidly approaching full maturity. Scored for festive D-major forces including pairs of trumpets and oboes alongside a solo flute that takes a singing role in the Andante, the work is notable for its brilliant outer movements, the unusually intimate slow movement with its prominent flute writing, and a vigorous concluding Allegro in 12/8 that drives forward with infectious energy. It is a key document of Mozart's symphonic development between his Italian journeys and the great Salzburg works to come.

This score is faithfully reproduced from the historic Mozarts Werke Gesamtausgabe (Complete Works), issued by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig between 1877 and 1883 — the first scholarly collected edition of Mozart's music. K. 133 appears in Serie VIII (Symphonien), Band 1, No. 20, on pages 2–20 (252–270), bearing plate number W.A.M. 133. Edited by some of the most distinguished German musicologists of the late nineteenth century, this edition served as the foundational scholarly text for performers, conductors, and researchers for nearly a century, and remains a cornerstone reference for Mozart's orchestral output.
