Composed in May 1772 when Mozart was just sixteen, the Symphony No. 17 in G Major, K.129 belongs to a remarkable group of Salzburg symphonies written in rapid succession that spring. Scored for two oboes, two horns, and strings, it radiates the bright, pastoral character that G major often inspired in Mozart, with a graceful Andante at its heart and a buoyant 3/8 finale that anticipates the wit of his later symphonic finales. Though less frequently programmed than his mature symphonies, K.129 offers conductors and ensembles a charming window into Mozart's developing voice during one of the most prolific periods of his adolescence.
This score is reproduced from the landmark Mozarts Werke, the first complete critical edition of Mozart's works, issued by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig between 1877 and 1883. K.129 appears in Serie VIII (Symphonien), Band 1, published in 1880 under plate number W.A.M. 129. Prepared by an editorial committee that included Johannes Brahms, Joseph Joachim, and Philipp Spitta, the Breitkopf complete edition established the textual foundation upon which Mozart performance and scholarship rested for nearly a century, and it remains a touchstone for those wishing to engage with the work as it was understood by the great nineteenth-century editors.
