Composed in Vienna in February 1772 when Mozart was just sixteen, Symphony No. 15 in G Major, K.124 belongs to the remarkable series of symphonies the young composer produced in rapid succession after returning from his second Italian journey. Cast in the customary four movements, the work blends Italianate lyricism with the courtly grace of Salzburg, opening with a bright Allegro, followed by a graceful Andante, a sturdy Menuetto, and a spirited Presto finale. Scored for a modest classical ensemble of oboes, horns, and strings, it offers a transparent texture that rewards careful reading and attentive performance.
This score reproduces the symphony as it appears in the landmark Mozarts Werke complete edition, issued by Breitkopf & Härtel of Leipzig beginning in the 1870s. Specifically drawn from Serie VIII (Symphonien), Band 1, No. 15, this 1880 publication (plate W.A.M. 124) was the first published edition of the symphony in full score and remains a foundational scholarly reference.
