About this edition

Composed in early 1785 and premiered by Mozart himself at Vienna's Burgtheater on March 10 of that year, the Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major, K.467 stands as one of the supreme achievements of the Classical concerto. The luminous Andante in F major — with its hushed muted strings, throbbing triplet pulse, and long-breathed cantilena for the soloist — has become one of the most beloved slow movements in all of music, while the outer movements showcase Mozart's mastery of symphonic argument, conversational woodwind writing, and operatic lyricism in equal measure.

This score reproduces the text from the celebrated Mozarts Werke, the first complete critical edition of Mozart's works, issued by Breitkopf & Härtel of Leipzig between 1877 and 1883 under the editorial guidance of leading nineteenth-century Mozart scholars. The concerto appears in Serie XVI, Band 3, No. 21 of that monumental series (plate W.A.M. 467), published in 1878. As the foundational scholarly edition of Mozart's output, the Breitkopf & Härtel Gesamtausgabe served as the standard reference text for generations of conductors, performers, and musicologists, and it remains a touchstone for studying the composer's orchestral writing.
