About this edition
Composed in a matter of weeks during the autumn of 1723, Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto (HWV 17) stands among the crowning achievements of Baroque opera seria. Premiered at London's King's Theatre in 1724, it captivates with its psychological depth, dazzling vocal writing for Cleopatra and Caesar, and richly colored orchestration, making it one of the most frequently staged and recorded operas of Handel's entire career.
This full score reproduces Band 68 of Georg Friedrich Händels Werke, the pioneering complete critical edition published by the Deutsche Händelgesellschaft in Leipzig in 1875. Edited by the renowned Handel scholar Friedrich Chrysander (1826–1901), this landmark series was the first sustained effort to establish authoritative, scholarly musical texts for the whole of Handel's output, and it remains a touchstone reference for performers and musicologists studying his operas today.
