Glazunov's Symphony No. 6 in C minor, Op. 58 (completed in 1896) is arguably the most dramatic and tightly argued of his symphonies, opening with a brooding slow introduction that erupts into an Allegro passionato of unusual turbulence for a composer often prized for his serenity. Its emotional weight is balanced by extraordinary craftsmanship: a central set of orchestral variations that transforms a single hymn-like theme through a dazzling range of colors and textures, a graceful Intermezzo, and a broad, affirmative finale that resolves the work's early conflict into C major. For conductors and orchestral players, it offers a rewarding study in how a master of counterpoint and orchestration could channel Tchaikovskian intensity through Rimsky-Korsakov's luminous instrumental palette.
This printing reproduces the full score issued by M. P. Belaieff in Leipzig in 1898 (plate number 1592). Mitrofan Belyayev's firm, founded in 1885 to promote the Russian national school, printed its catalog in Leipzig using Germany's finest music engravers, and its editions of Glazunov, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Lyadov became the authoritative texts for this repertoire. Prepared in close consultation with the composer and his circle, the Belaieff score remains the standard source from which later editions and performing materials derive.
