Few works in the late Romantic repertoire achieve the quiet perfection of Fauré's Pavane in F-sharp Minor, Op. 50. Composed in 1887 and dedicated to his patroness Élisabeth, comtesse Greffulhe, the piece transforms the stately Renaissance court dance into something utterly Fauréan — a melancholy, modally inflected melody floating over a pizzicato pulse, with the woodwinds (flute and oboe in particular) carrying some of the most exquisitely shaped lines in the orchestral literature. Originally conceived for piano and later orchestrated, the score is a model of restraint and refined craftsmanship, equally beloved in its purely instrumental form and in the version with optional chorus setting verses by Robert de Montesquiou.
This volume reproduces the full orchestral score issued by J. Hamelle of Paris (plate number J. 4727 H., circa 1901), the long-time publisher of Fauré's music throughout his career. Hamelle had acquired the rights to Fauré's earlier and middle-period works and issued the authoritative engraved editions that circulated throughout Europe during the composer's lifetime. As a first-edition later print prepared under the publisher's direct supervision, this score reflects the text as Fauré knew it, and it remains a primary reference for performers and scholars working with the Pavane today.
