Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Messe de minuit pour Noël, H. 9, is one of the most cherished choral works of the French Baroque and a fixture of the Christmas season. Rather than inventing fresh melodic material, Charpentier built the movements of the Mass Ordinary on popular French Christmas carols — noëls such as "Joseph est bien marié," "Or nous dites Marie," and "Une jeune pucelle" — threading these familiar tunes through the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. The result is a work of disarming warmth and transparency, scored for soloists, chorus, strings, and pairs of flutes with basso continuo, in which learned counterpoint and village song meet as equals.
Charpentier holds an unusual place in music history: almost none of his vast output was printed in his lifetime, and the works survive chiefly in his own hand. His autograph manuscripts — the twenty-eight bound volumes known as the Mélanges autographes, held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France — contain the Messe de minuit in tome XXV, cahier LXVI. This score was engraved directly from that autograph (folios 62–77; shelfmark F-Pn Rés. VM1 259 (25)) by Daniel Van Gilst, who released the resulting edition into the public domain under a Creative Commons Zero dedication. Because it derives from the composer's own manuscript rather than a later editorial reworking, it reflects Charpentier's notation, scoring, and intentions as faithfully as any modern reading can.
