Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58, completed in 1806 and premiered by the composer himself in 1808, marked a profound reimagining of the concerto form. From its hushed opening — the soloist beginning alone, an unprecedented gesture in the concerto literature — to the extraordinary slow movement, in which the piano gently subdues the orchestra's stern unisons in a dialogue often compared to Orpheus taming the Furies, the work reveals Beethoven at his most lyrical and introspective. This score is reproduced from the celebrated Ludwig van Beethovens Werke complete edition issued by Breitkopf & Härtel of Leipzig, the first comprehensive critical edition of Beethoven's works.
