About this edition
Few works in Bach's cantata output dazzle quite like Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen, BWV 51. Scored for solo soprano, solo trumpet, strings, and continuo, this exuberant cantata pushes both singer and trumpeter to the outer limits of their instruments, culminating in a jubilant "Alleluja" that remains one of the most technically demanding movements in the entire sacred repertoire. Its bright D major sonority and soaring coloratura have made it a perennial favorite for concert performance far beyond its original liturgical context.
This edition reproduces pages 1–24 of Band 12 of the Bach-Gesellschaft Ausgabe, the landmark complete critical edition of Bach's works issued by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig beginning in 1851. This volume, bearing plate number B.W. XII (2), was published in 1863 under the editorship of Wilhelm Rust (1822–1892), the distinguished Bach scholar and later Thomaskantor who prepared many of the Bach-Gesellschaft's most important cantata volumes. As the first complete scholarly edition of Bach's music, the Bach-Gesellschaft Ausgabe established the textual foundation on which nearly all subsequent Bach scholarship and performing editions have been built, making it a touchstone source for conductors and researchers alike.
